Program Prerequisites

Admission Requirements: All requirements must be met in order to be admitted to the program.
• Grade 12 graduate OR mature student status (19 Years of age or older and out of school for at least a year)
• If you are a mature student without Grade 12, you either need Grade 11 English OR you can demonstrate English fluency through our literacy test
• Good English skills in reading, writing, oral and comprehension
• Performance Ability Statement confirming your physical and mental ability to work as a Health Care Assistant.
• RCMP criminal record check (consult your local police station)
• Personal interview with Thompson Career College
• A recent test for Tuberculosis (usually the Mantoux test) showing no exposure to infection.
• Clear understanding of Health Care Assistant responsibilities, and why this career fits your abilities and interests
• Volunteering or experience working with the elderly
• Two letters (or emails) from references who confirm your suitability for this career (teachers, employers, co-workers, counselors, doctors, nurses, care aides)
Other Requirements:
The following items also need to be provided. They are not conditions of admission, but ideally they will be dealt with before beginning the program. In any case, they must be completed prior to the clinical training portion of the program (week 16).
• Up to date immunizations (information on recommended immunizations will be provided by the school during the admission process)
• WHMIS certificate (go to next page for info on WHMIS)
• Food Safe 1 certificate (go to next page for Food Safe info)
