Job Description
Health Care Assistants are a vital part of the health care team providing long term care to the elderly and the disabled. They work as Resident Care Aides in facilities and as Home Support Workers or Community Health Workers in the community.
Health Care Assistants, working as part of a multidisciplinary team under the direction of an RN or LPN, provide the following services in a variety of settings:
- Assist clients with the tasks of daily living
- Help deliver care and rehabilitation programs to individuals with disabilities and chronic medical conditions
- Provide for the comfort, safety and well-being of clients
- Observe and report on client health and living conditions
- Assist with recreational activities

Employers require the following qualifications:
- Graduation from a recognized training program
- Have a good understanding of the conditions that lead to disability
- Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for clients' individuality and culture
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to work as a member of a team
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
- Ability to organize work and manage time
- Ability to safely operate lifts and other equipment
