Career Opportunities
A well-qualified conscientious medical transcriptionist (MT), according to all the latest information, has a secure future. There is a huge demand for such MT's throughout North America . With international services hiring, location is not an issue and with an aging population the need continues to grow.
Graduates will have employment opportunities through Service Providers, Private Sector Clinics, Long Term Care Facilities, Community Health Agencies or Associations, Insurance Companies, Hospitals, Doctors' Offices, Medical Clinics and through self employment. Both on-site and at-home employment opportunities are available. Demand for quality trained MT's is very high as both American and Canadian companies hire Canadian Medical Transcriptionists. There is a growing trend for hospitals, clinics and doctor's offices to contract out Medical Transcription work to service providers and individual contractors who specialize in transcription. The ubiquitous availability of high speed internet access has made it possible for this work to be performed by individuals who work from home offices, either as employees of service providers, hospitals or clinics, or as individual entrepreneurs. However, these jobs demand a higher level of Medical Transcription skill than that which is provided by Medical Office Assistant programs, which provide only a small amount of transcription training as part of a general program. Therefore, focused programs such as this one, that provide intensive preparation, are required to meet the needs of these new jobs.
It is important to note that the jobs our graduates will target are not all 'located' in BC or Western Canada. Graduates from the Thompson Career College program may be employed by companies, hospitals, clinics and doctors from anywhere in North America, working from their home offices, using the internet for uploading and downloading work, and for communicating with their employers and clients.
Over 90% of students who successfully graduate from the Career Step curriculum are employed in the Medical Transcription industry.
Career Step has arrangements with several major Medical Transcription service providers to screen and test their prospective Medical Transcriptionists using the same assessment tools that are used in this program. This close link to employers ensures that the curriculum remains relevant and teaches students what they need to know to succeed in gaining employment. A certificate from an institution offering the Career Step curriculum is widely recognized in the industry, and several service providers waive their experience requirement if applicants have successfully completed a Career Step program.
The Career Step curriculum is rated by Medical Transcription employers as one of the top three medical transcriptionist courses available in North America. The course is endorsed by several employers including MedQuist, the largest Medical Transcription service provider in North America (www.medquist.com). To be considered for employment at Medquist, applicants must have two or more years of recent work experience as a medical transcriptionist, or must be a recent graduate of one of the approved medical transcription training programs. Career Step is an approved program and is the preferred provider of training programs for MedQuist.
